On the tail end of working 12 hour days during my first pregnancy, I fell down and broke my foot. Suddenly life stood still as I grappled with the reality of not being able to walk or drive a car.
I had worked for months organizing a conference for a non-profit organization. After it was over, I still had follow-up work. Now all I could do was sit at home and keep my yellow cast elevated. After two weeks, there was still no way I could drive with that cast. It would take my husband an extra hour and a half to drop me off at work and pick me up each day. Circumstances forced me to leave my job two months early.
My entrance into the world of stay at home moms was different than I expected. A huge pregnant belly and a cast from the knee to the toes made baby preparations and housework problematic! Even after I got my cast off, I couldn’t walk well until after the baby was born.
Life has a way of taking unexpected turns.
- You get a scary diagnosis.
- Your family gets relocated.
- You lose your job.
- You lose a baby.
You didn’t plan for things like this, so it feels like the rug has been pulled out from under you, but God’s got you covered. Take a look at these verses:
When Life takes unexpected turns, you can expect God to show up.
He rides across the heavens to help you. In the middle of your unexpected, unplanned, or unwanted circumstances, God’s got you covered.
Life is unpredictable, but God is unchanging.
Nothing changes His love for you. When you’re in trouble, God is so intent on helping you that He’ll cross heaven and earth to do it. When changes come on fast and hard, and your confidence crumbles, God is your refuge. When you’re too tired to keep going, his everlasting arms are under you. In fact He’ll even carry you if that’s what it takes.
And when your heart is aching, that’s when God is the closest. He is close to the broken-hearted. (Psalm 34:18)
My family just got some news that threw us for a loop. We’re facing lots of questions. What is best for our family? What is best for the little church we lead? We don’t know the answers, but we know God does.
God’s got us covered.
I don’t know what unexpected circumstances you might be facing today, friend, but you can expect God to show up for you. His everlasting arms are right there holding you up. He’s got you covered.
Now it’s your turn. Has life thrown you a curve ball lately? How did you get through it?

Stopping by from Testimony Tuesday. Love this reminder that God is with us no matter what twists and turns life takes us on. I wrote on a similar theme this week, too! Definitely something I want to have sink in deep to my soul so it’s the first thing to surface when the big stuff hits.

This post came right from heaven today. A very difficult teaching experience last year. New assignment for the next year starting on Monday. How much I need to rest in the Lord, knowing that HE is in control, not me. Thank you Betsy for sharing from your heart and remind us that we are all struggling but we are not alone.

Wow, that sounds tough, Adriana. May God show himself FAITHFUL and STRONG to you. Hope all goes well on Monday. Praying for you right now.

Thanks for another wonderful post, Betsy! I’m going to share this on Facebook. You rock! 🙂
Life threw me a curve ball when my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago. I wrote about how God saw us through on Now What?, a Church of God publication. Here’s the link:

It is amazing to see, in retrospect, how God really does intervene and carry us through these hard things.
Blessings!

I wouldn’t say I’m facing unexpected circumstances today in particular. I think my LIFE is unexpected circumstances! When I got married, I planned to be a stay-at-home mom to our future children. Instead I find myself a single mom who works full time. But God has definitely carried me through every day. His holy will is not always what I would choose for myself, but knowing that He knows, wants, plans, and achieves what is best for me gives me the courage to live cheerfully every day under His care. God has me and my children covered with a car that runs, a very nice job that provides income for all our necessities, a loving home, and supportive family and friends.
Thank you for this post, Betsy. It’s one of my favorites!

That’s an interesting take: “My life is unexpected circumstances.” I’m sure many can relate. You are doing a great job, Deborah, trusting God and keeping a positive outlook, standing strong despite challenges! So admirable.

I love this post, Betsy. Life has definitely taken some unexpected turns in our life, and God has shown me that He is always faithful, even when I worry myself sick! We had some unexpected expenses come up this week, but God faithfully provided for our need and has shown us once again that when we put our trust in Him, it will stand secure. Thanks so much for sharing! So much truth here.

Oh, Abby, it’s funny you say that about unexpected expenses. That happened to me this week too. And it’s like I wrote this last week, and it went out the window! Thanks for the reminder. God’s got our expenses covered.
