The One Powerful Focus I Want for my Life

I may not always see my calling clearly, but I want my life to have one focal point. God's love. How many hats do you wear? Do you ever feel pulled in ten directions? I’m a mother, wife, daughter, sister, teacher, chauffeur, pastor’s wife, friend, writer, and student. It’s easy to get mixed up about what hat I’m supposed to be wearing on what day. One day I’m working chemistry problems, and the next I might lead a Bible study. What’s my role supposed to be? I lose focus.

And then there’s the multi-tasking. How can a person cook a meal, answer an email, fold clothes, and answer a phone call at the same time? Then someone walks into the kitchen and says, “Have you seen my backpack?” It’s enough to scatter anyone’s brain! You lose focus.

I may not always see my calling clearly, and I may forget what I’m supposed to be doing, but I want my life to have one focal point: Continue reading

3 tips for a happier heart. Life will always bring challenges, but we can cultivate a more positive attitude.

Do you know anyone who wears gray-colored misery spectacles? No matter what happens, he finds something to complain about. Those misery spectacles magnify everything. The weather’s too cold, or too hot, or too rainy. The food’s too salty. When you’re wearing gray-colored glasses, your glass is always half empty.

Let me tell you, on my bad days, that person in the gray-colored shades is me. I can moan and groan along with the best of them, but I don’t want to be like that.

The Best Gift You Can Give

The very act of slowing down to be present is a gift to yourself and to the people you love.

I almost missed a significant conversation with my 18 year old son because of Downton Abby. (Can you believe it?) The only television show I watch all week was about to start, and we’d already been talking 10 minutes. So I said, “Well, I’ll let you go. Was there anything else you wanted to say?”

His answer surprised me.

He said, “My week wasn’t the greatest. Now that school started, I have loads of work, and you know David Bowie died.” Continue reading

How to Get More out of the Bible

We need the Word like we need water. Here are 10 ways to take hold of God's Word with all your heart.

Have you ever turned on a water faucet, but nothing came out? Back when my husband and I were newly married in El Salvador, our neighborhood had running water only one hour a day, at 3:00 a.m.! We’d set an alarm clock, and I’d start the washing machine while Jose filled plastic storage containers in the bathrooms. Then we’d fill a large sink on the patio next to the kitchen before going back to bed.
